Bilstein stuts and spacer question 900

Hi all,

I'm thinking of putting Bilstein HD struts on my '93 960. When I looked at the various online outlets several of them had a note that says one must use a spacer volvo oem part 1229423. Anyone who's installed them know if this is true? The Bilstein strut in question is P36-0292.

I saw some 240 discussions about this, just wondering if it's applicable to the 960.
