starts, but will not advance 200 1984

I have a 1984 240 sedan. I had it towed to the repair shop because it will not move. You can start it, but it doesn't have enough power to move at all. It's getting fuel, the distributor is fine, it starts ok. He says it's an electronic problem, but he cannot find it. this car is 20 years old and it seems like purchasing a new wiring harness is not worth the expense. Would this solve my problem anyway? Has anyone ever heard of this problem? Do you have any suggestions? He's had it for a week and can't figure it out. I'm ready to take it home and rip into it myself. Help! JWW
