HELP MY 240 can't see at night 200

about a week ago i started smelling the faint sent of "burnt wire", but could not find the source and had nothing that showed signs of dyeing. then last night 40 miles from home my head lights decided that they wanted to be intermittent like my wipers. to get them them to stay on, i pulled the switch and ran a jumper wire. that got me home. still could smell the "burnt wire smell". noticed this morning that with the lights off i don't smell the "burnt wire smell". when the headlight relay failes does it over heat and give me that smell, or is there something else in the circuit thats giving me problems. i couldn't feel any hot or warm wires, but then i didn't break any harness' apart.

thanks a bunch
