speedometer woe 700

I've read all I can read about the intermittent speedometer on my 1992 740T wagon (175K). Checked the plug/cable at the sending unit bolted to the differential. Installed a used speedometer sending unit over the weekend. Still no fix. Odometer is also not working. Is it possible to "see" the signal out of the sending unit with a Volt/Ohm meter? Not quite ready to drop $120 bucks for a new sending unit unless I can prove the old and new/used ones are defective. Any trouble shooting ideas would be much appreciated.
