Intermittent AC Clutch Engagement at Start Up 700 1992

Greetings All,

Our new to us 740 (156k) has an intermittent on the AC clutch. Sometimes, especially if the AC hasn't been used for a few days, the clutch will not engage for 5, 10, or even 15 minutes. After it engages, the AC system works just fine, tons of cold air, reasonable cycling, etc. Once the clutch is working, generally it works fine with stopping and starting, you know, like a whole bunch of different errands around town.

I've read through the FAQ on the AC system and have a general idea of the components and what they do. I'll trace through the system to try and track it down. What I was hoping was if somebody would know the most likely culprit given the above symptom. As with any intermittent problem, tracing it down can be a bear.

Thanks,
Jim
