intermittent loss of power 900 1993

I have a 940GL Estate (1988cc) petrol. Have replaced the cat, rear exhaust box, full lubricant change, new oil, air and fuel filters, new plugs. It has a very erratic idle (from very slow to 1300 revs) and vibrates when idling. It has this habit of losing power and stopping, sometimes after 5 miles, sometimes 50, sometimes not at all. When it loses power the throttle has no effect and the engine slows to a complete stall. The lamda sensor light is now on all of the time. Any ideas?
