Help replacing the carpeted door panel thingys to the door panel 700 1986

I am having a tough time replacing the carpet-covered door panel thingys that I had to take off to remove the door panel on my 740 wagon. On the cardboard side there are three cutouts with "slide in" catches (yeah, right!) and I can't seem to get any of them to fit back over any of the three plastic tabs that are inbedded in the door panel. I've tried prying the plastic tabs toward me a bit, I've tried putting my finger over the hole that I can feel from the carpeted side and pressing it toward the tabs and sliding it down, I've tried putting them on starting from the right side, I've tried starting from the left side, tried putting them on sliding the panel down toward the tabs, up from the tabs ... none of them seem to work. And they were so easy to get off! I can't believe it! Just when I was starting to feel so confident with a wrench too. I feel so duh. Anybody got any master tricks to help with this before my self-esteem plummets?
