Mystery ailment: Engine dies after starting unless revved 200

When I start the engine, I have to keep revving, or it dies. If I keep revving, no problem, but when I take my foot off the gas to shift into N, she winds down to nothing. Until last night, this never happened. What could it be? The battery light comes on along with the service light, but I don't think it's the battery.

Background: I recently had some guys who turned out to be morons work on my stereo. They bungled the job in several ways, and I insisted they fix it at no extra cost. They did, but they weren't happy.

The engine problem started when I tried to drive off their lot last night. One of the installers--the only one who seemed like a decent guy--actually helped me get it started so I could drive home; he adjusted the idling cable. It worked for the time being, though the engine idled rough. But I got home going 70 w/ headlights on.

But this morning, I can't keep her going. (I tried to shift into reverse but she died in neutral; I rammed my girlfriend's RAV4 parked in front of me on the hill--the RAV has a scraped wheel cover, but not a scratch on the brick!)

I wondered if one of the other installers--the one I argued with--may have somehow sabotaged the car or left the ignition on while working on it. Seems unlikely, but it's weird that this problem just now happened.

Ideas? Thanks again.
