please help with car headlight problem......

I am far away from home visiting relatives in Georgia and as we arrived we realized that we had no headlights and rear lights, only the high beams and brake lights came on. Then the head lights came on, then nothing again. Then when we turned on the lights again, only the low beams in the front came on and the back lights, but no regular head lights. Do you have any idea what it could be. I don't have my regular mechanics of course nearby to go to.
