Just back from the garage - hopes dashed again...

I'm trying to restart my 1967 B-18 (in a Duett)which has been apart for a while. Engine ran (reasonably well) prior to disassembly.

I changed the old A cam to a new C cam and had the head redone with valve job to run unleaded gasoline. I had no trouble reassembling those components, adjucsting valves, etc.

I changed the old single Stromberg for a pair of newly rebuilt (by one of the best in the business) SUs. New fuel pump and water pump as well.

The ignition system was replaced by an electronic Bosch from a 1975 240 (see earlier ignition posts). I had considerable trouble getting the wiring right; with help from the kind folks on Brickboard I got that sorted out. I know I have spark.

Tried to start the car this morning and no go. On turning over I now get an occasional (rare) soft pop (sort of like a back fire but not nearly as loud) followed by a whisp of smoke from the forward air filter. I checked fuel (fuel seen in filter) and reluctantly took off one of the float chamber covers (fuel in bowl). I rechecked static timing (~17 degrees BTDC) and double checked the firing order (yes, CCW).

Any thoughts, suggestions, as always, much appreciated!!
