rear axle help (1990T wagon) 700

Was pulling the rear axle for a bearing replacement that will be done tomorrow and was following Chiltons manual. Axle was easy enough to pull however, Chiltons refers to a "toothed wheel" pressed onto the axle 116mm from the end. There is no toothed wheel on my axle. So pulled the axle from a 1987T wagon parts car i have. No toothed wheel on that axle either. What is the deal? Is the toothed wheel still inside and no longer pressed onto the shaft? Is this normal or abnormal? Do I just replace the bearing and put the axle back in and everything will be fine?
