Thanks everyone for your help!

Dead on about the distributor being off. In my case it wasn't the drive gear that went in 180 degrees off (I really was VERY careful about that!) but it was the electronic distributor that didn't fit in the traditional orientation because of its vacuum retard diaphragm. Somewhere I deluded myself into thinking that I had it all right. I changed the wires around and the engine started right up!! The best part was setting up the engine with no 1 at TDC (per suggestions on the brick board and SWEM site) and then getting ready to take off the distributor cap. S U S P E N S E.... As soon as I saw the rotor pointing aft, I knew the problem was solved!!

Sounds just fine. Next step - tune up and hit the road!!
