Finally I have made some serious progress towards having a normal complete car. Some of you may remember that my 82 245T came with a weird problem- the ignition switch was broken and the electrical part was disconnected, hanging below the dash. My wife thinks it's funny but it is getting old starting it with a screwdriver.
The lock part is still attached to the column normally- what happened was the finger on the back end of the lock cylinder broke off, and no longer engaged the electrical part of the switch.
I posted before about the security bolts holding it together and asked all my tech friends about it. Got a lot of good responses and finally got the time and the cobalt drill bits tonight.
So I was able to drill into the security bolts- these are self locking, headless bolts that look like a rivet, for those who haven't enjoyed their company before. Removed no problem with my MAC tools bolt extractors- these are a 4-fluted or square EZ-out type bit. Nice tools that I've managed not to break!
So I wrestled the lock out. I have another lock complete with switch. Ideally, I'd like to change the lock cylinder to keep the original key. Looking at the barrel, I see two dowel pins inserted at 90°, which don't come through the opposite side of the housing. I don't see how they'll come out. They seem to be driven in, but with no way to push them back out. They don't push any deeper, at least not with a reasonable amount of force.
They don't extract with a magnet but I haven't tried any destructive measures yet. I guess I could drill them.
At the other end, there is a rectangular cover crimped in, to cover the steering lock bolt. Anyone removed that before?
Ideas/comments/manifestoes welcome.
