bleeding brake system and m/c 200 1984

I built a pressure bleeder yesterday (thirteen dollar garden sprayer)with 2 dollars of line and a used M/C cap) and bled the brake system on my 84 240. I had to pump the peddle a bit to get the rear circuits to open up, but all in all it worked well. There is one problem though; when I had finshed purging the lines of all the old black and cruddy fluid, the rear chamber of the M/C was still full of the old black stuff. Why did this not cycle out, and how do I go about replacing that fluid?
TIA
JD
