Overdrive problem 700

Hey all,
Its that time of year, where it is cold, and I must drive my 91 740 at 65mph for about 15 minutes before it finally smooths out and goes into Overdrive. It goes in faster in summer months. I have replaced that switch thing under the ashtray with no noticeable improvements.
Any suggestions on what to try (and spend money on) next?? Its frustrating and of course, eats up gas quicker.
