Volvo 780 Bertone 1989, misc info. 700 1988

There are a few board members who have 780 Bertones (myself included). They're wonderful vehicles, but finding parts can be difficult since all the sheetmetal, glass, and many interior parts are specific to the 780 (and fewer than 10,000 vehicles were made). Any time I'm traveling, I call the salvage yards where I'm visiting and stop by any of them that have a 780 in the yard. The 780s were built to be a luxary touring car, rides and handles great (more towards a Lexus than a Porsche), but have a heavy chassis and not something that you would see in "The Fast & The Furious."

The dollar value of the headlights, tailights, and turn signals is not a fixed value. It depends on how badly somebody needs it... The headlights (which are glass, not plastic) are about $400 to $600 each from the dealership, the tail lights are $800 each, and the front turn signals are $125. Prices on eBay float up and down from $30 to $150 for the head/tail lights depending on who needs them, etc. Personally, I'm not in a dire need for them now, but I always put in a low bid when the auctions come up. There's a slim chance that I might win them, and for that price I'd be willing to have them sitting on the garage shelf as spare stock in case one of mine breaks.

I bought my 780 on eBay for $1,200 and drove it home from Chicago. It spent the next 11 months in my garage and I worked on it during my spare time (catching up on the service schedule, tuneup items, interior cleaning, a few wiring issues, etc). It was more of a hobby/project than anything else, but the patience was worth it and I did all the work myself. She still needs an alignment and a front crank seal replaced, but aside from that it's a great car.

Check out the following website for more info on the 780.

God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.
