Electric vaccum pump for brakes 140-160 1973

My 142 doesn't produce enough vacuum for reliable operation of the brakes after the engine rebuild. The problem seems to be caused by a combination of big cam, short manifold runners and twin webers.
My mechanic is suggesting putting in either an electric vacuum pump or a diesel type alternator which have vacuum pumps built into them

Does anyone have any experience with either of these - or have a completely different suggestion?

Regards

JohnH
