Why does my 'new' AW71L still shift hard??? 900 1991

I've recently installed a Volvo exchange AW71L transmission in my 91 940. It was manufactured in April 1993.
At certain times this transmission STILL shifts almost as hard from 1-2 as the old transmission. Above about one third throttle it shifts perfectly smoothly through all gears. Anything less (such as when in stop-start traffic) and it slams into second gear.
The selector linkages are correctly adjusted. I've used a Castrol full synthetic trans fluid. The kickdown cable has been adjusted over and over again from tighter than spec to looser than spec. It's looser than spec at the moment and it has improved it *slightly*.
I'm pretty annoyed that a rebuilt transmission still does this. My folks have a 1990 740 with an AW70L and it shifts perfectly through all gears and all throttle positions. Have I missed something here? How does your AW7* transmission behave?
Any insights would be appreciated.

Brad
