alternator or other electrical problem? 200

Hey all,
My 88 240 manual tranny wagon my wife drives. Idiot lights stay on and then flicker for the last week instead of going out once you first rev it up. Then tonight, driving down the road, the lights dim, the car shuts down. She panics, calls me up, I say try to start it again. Turns the key and it starts right up. Drives a half mile, and lights dim and car shuts down again. Went up to fetch her and I tried it, and it turned over slowly like a weak battery, but would not start.
I'm inclined to think its the alternator, but wouldn't it stay running on battery power? the battery is fairly new. I hate electrical problems.Any help in diagnosing this problem?
Thanks!
Carl
