OK to tow? 200 1983

Will be picking up a car I bought about 500 miles from here. It runs/ drives well, but I will be towing it back because of the logistics of getting to the car to start with.
It's an automatic. Besides the safety issues, if I put the car on a tow dolly (with the front wheels off the ground), and let the car run as I tow it back- would that "save" the transmission? (or will I need to drop the driveshaft?)
Can the car be towed safely (with steering wheel locked) with the front wheels on the ground ,and the rear wheels on the dolly?
Thanks,Bruce
