Steering rack clunk 200 1987

I think I've got a rack gone bad. Symptom is heavy clunk over bumps that I feel in the chassis, but not through the steering wheel. Checking each wheel independently yields no significant play. With both wheels elevated, I feel and hear a heavy clunk as the steering passes through center. The clunk sounds like it's coming from the passenger side of the rack. I've had no fluid loss, but the PS boot is loose at the rack end.
Is this a case of bad rack?
FCPG has them for $200+core. Is that the route to go?
