Can't get new OE Tailgate Struts to compress for installation 200 1987

This is "Remote Maintenance".

I had a pair of OE TG struts drop-shipped to my daughter in Mass. She can't get either one to compress, even when she applies all her strength & weight with strut off the car and pointed down on a wood block.

She says they are about 1/2" too long to fit onto the mounting stud, after screwing the rod all the way into the ball joint end. (TG can't be raised far enough to allow for the extended length of the strut.)

Any ideas? She has installed (aftermarket?)TG struts in the past with no problem, but maybe there is a trick to the OE versions???
