Error in Bentley's? 200

I suppose this may have been discussed before, but there seems to be an error in the Bentley manual. Specifically, the example that is used for adjusting valve clearances (sec. 214-3) seems to be in error. It would seem that if I wish to decrease valve lash or gap I would install a thicker shim. However in the example cited by Bentley they in fact use a thinner shim. Anyone care to comment on my foolish misinterpretation, my rehashing an old subject, or gall in suggesting the book might be in error? :o)
Seriously, am I reading the example correctly?
