The CONTINUING Saga of 'The Windshield Wipers from Outer Space'... 700

The windshield wipers on my 87 740T are acting weird. I can't determine whether it is a wiper motor problem, a wiring problem, or a switch problem. The wiper sequence is position 1: intermittent, position 2: off; position 3: normal speed. ONLY whenever the mornings are very cool or cold do the wiper works in intermittent mode, or when the vehicle is cold (as in not warmed upo yet). Once things warm up, the intermittent wiper selection simply does not work. So, should I be looking at relays, wiring in the wiper stem, the motor. It's obviously not a serious problem but at some point I would love for this car to have EVERYTHING working EXACTLY as it is supposed to, because it's such a joy even with MOSTLY everything working ALMOST like it should! Thanks in advance.
