propane trick led me to bad intake manifold, now smooth as silk 200 1989

Dear Volvo Mechanics,

Thanks for your help in diagnosing my rough idling 1989 240 DL sedan.

I used the propane trick to lead me to a bad intake manifold gasket. When I held the propane near the intake manifold gasket the idle increased.

I just finished putting the new gasket on and the car purrs like a kitten.

Interestingly there was some black in the intake holes for the 2, 3, and 4 cylinders. All of these must have leaked a bit. The gasket I took off had an egg shaped cylinder 4. That one was probably the worst one.

I also noticed that the engine runs quieter. The sucking of air added a hissing sound that I did not recognize.

On a passing note, I would like to strangle the Sweed who came up with the flame trap hose layout. I really should reposition mine.

Thanks again.
