I've been driving a 16valve 740 wagon for the last 80K and love it. But, it's a B234 that's got almost 200K and I worry about it, considering a few things that went wrong during a head replacement that we aren't going to talk about.
Anyway. I was wanting a cost of ownership comparison between a 91 E30 318is BMW and a 91-94 940turbo. The main concern is turbo reliability on shorter neighborhood trips. I don't take that many but I do live in an urban environment and I know that is extremely hard on engines, probably worse on turbos, I just don't know how much worse.
I really like the 318is. The main feature that it has over the volvo is that it wasn't offered with an auto transmission. What it doesn't have over the volvo, of course is safety. I don't have any exact figures, but it's a given the the volvo will be MUCH safer.
The bimmer gets better mileage though; about 28Hwy. What can I expect from a turbo B230? I'm guessing about 23Hwy.
I won't be in a position to buy a car for a few months, but I'd like to have something to dream about. Any other suggestions? I'd like to stay RWD, but I'll sacrifice it for a manual trans.
Thanks
- Nate
