240 , High pitched whine at 60mph , Carrier Bearing ?

I have a 1990 240 with 175k miles . With the onset of colder weather here in the NorthEast, my 240 has started to produce on/off a high pitched whine at approx 60 mph from somehwere under the car , then when slowing I hear a whir, whir, whir sound that decreases with road speed. I think from the symptoms it may be the carrier bearing.
Can anyone confirm these symptoms ? is this about the mileage ( if there is one ) that these bearing fail ?
This looks to be a reasonable do-it-your self job using a floor jack and hand tools ?
Appreciate any insight on this ... Thanks ! Todd Traver
