Steering Clunk Diagnosis 900 1995

I’m trying to diagnose a steering “clunk” in our 1995 940 wagon. When steering wheel is rocked left/right there is a light but distinct clunk at each reversal of steering input. With the weight on the wheels, I can make the noise go away by applying a transverse (push toward back of car) force to the driver’s side steering or track rod. I cannot feel looseness in the outer rod end joint, so I’m suspicious there is wear in the inner rod joint. My second thought would be an issue with the steering rack. Does any one have a way of pin pointing my problem? Thanks!
