Check Engine Light 900 1996

I have a 1996 Volvo 960 with 130,000 miles on it. I went on a trip for Thankgiving and the Check Engine Light came on for most of the trip ~ 500 miles. The car ran fine, still got 24 mpg on the interstate. Car idled fairly well. I do not have the OBDII diagnostic code tester. Is there any other way to pull the codes and see what is wrong? It still has the original O2 sensors.

Thanks,
Jimmy
