What causes various emissions problems? 700

I knew that MS doesn't have a CARB exemption, which is really why I posted. As for the malfunction light, mine's an 88 Turbo, no OBD, no light ;). As for EGR and AIR, what do those do and how do they interact with the stock EFI controller.

I'm basically looking for a way to get the car past the emissions test without having to pull everything out for the test and then reinstall. I have no real problem doing this, it's just a hassel that I don't want to deal with if I can manage.

Thanks,
Eamon
