weird FPR problems 700 1987

So I replaced my fuel pressure regulator over the weekend because I was positive it was bad. Inspection after removal confirmed my suspicion. But now, two days later, I'm having similar problems again with the NEW FPR. I pulled off the vaccuum line just to make sure it wasn't the brand new part i just put in and it REEKED of gasoline. I didn't even have to get my nose close to it. WTF?! Did the new FPR go bad? Could something on my car be causing this problem? Is there any other reason for the vaccuum hose coming off of my FPR to smell like gas? I don't want to slap another part on there just to have it break again.
