rear end rattle from shocks 700

my 760 gle estate as monroe adjustable shocks fitted at the rear.I think id be right in saying monroe was never standard equipment, nivomats being the original items.
The problem is a rattle coming from the rear shocks.I confirmed this by listening in the back while the car was driven. The bolts holding the upper end of the shocks are tight, along with the lower bolts.
I have the impression that the rattle is coming from the units themselves?, so
I have been thinking of replacing them with standard gas shocks, but Iam a little concerned about the rear end sitting to low if I go this route.
Ive searched the board giving me the impression that monroe units are fairly useless anyway
