In the ’89 240 5 speed the clutch has been slipping in high gears. I noticed it for the first time the other night when on the highway with the car loaded up with stuff that was altogether not too heavy.
Can you explain for me how to test for a clutch that needs adjustment versus one that needs replacement?
I adjusted the cable in either direction. When I adjusted per the Haynes Manual specs (1-3 mm of play at the fork) then I couldn’t get it into gear at all. When I tightened it so there was no play, I could shift it (except it was almost impossible to get it into first) but it would slip in the higher gears.
I read in the BB archives that for a test you can drive the car up against something solid (a tree was mentioned!), put it in first and let the clutch out and rev it until the motor reaches 2000 rpm. If it stalls then the clutch is good.
What I wonder is if there’s another way to test it and if there’s a way to sneak a peek at the clutch plate w/out taking the tranny out.
I’ve done more than a few clutch jobs on 122s. Are they more difficult on the 240?
