My poor poor car. I left it in the hands of my uncle for a year and it comes back to me in shambles. Some advice: If you ever go somewhere for an extended ammount of time where you can't bring your car, just sell it. Don't try storing it, don't trust a friend or relative to watch it, just sell it. Anyway, here's a quick list of some problems I've had or am having:
-Fuel Line corroded. Replaced some sections.
-Both fuel pumps went bad. He replaced the main with an aftermarket pump, didn't replace the in-tank pump. Aftermarket pump failed quickly. Have since replaced both as well as the entire sending unit in my tank.
-Distributor somehow sheared it's insides in half. replaced that.
-Fuel Pressure regulator broke. After I took the old FPR out, you could pour water into the return side and it would stream out of the vaccuum side. Have replaced that, only to have the replacement break too (I think)
-Tie-rod ends are so bad that they're actually dangerous at this point.
-My spark plugs were so fouled up for some reason that cylinder 3 was dead when I got it.
-injectors were clogged up
-My exhaust header leaks now
-I've got a ton of performance problems and horrible mileage (12mpg). It could be the bad FPR, faulty sensors, dirty throttle or IAC, clogged leaky injectors (again) or dreaded vaccuum leak.
-The sunroof leaked and as a result my headliner is literally disintegrating.
-The underbody corrosion is terrible. I've sheared a couple bolts off already.
Should I just give up? Part out this car? I can't even drive it anymore. It's a constant headache. The repairs will cost more than the kbb value for sure. I could afford the repairs that I know I need right now... I just need to know when to give up. I feel like, yes, it will be expensive, but when I'm done this car will be better than it's old self. Am I deluding myself? Anybody want an 87 740GLE for parts?? The body's actually in great condition.
