starting and idle problems 200 1989

alright for starters it takes at least 5-7 turns of the ignition to get the car started. I always have to give the car a lot of gas to get it going, then the inside of my car smells kind of like exhaust or gas. Once it is started it has a really hard time idleing. I will drive it and it does fine, but as soon as I pull up to a stop light or something the rpm meter starts going from 2 down to almost zero. what could this be? I want to go get it fixed, but i want to know how much money im looking at here. Any advice would be really helpful!!! I dont really know too much about cars...all i know is that i love my volvo and i want to keep it as long as possible. thanks!
