Clutch Adjustment 200 1993

I noticed that the clutch on my 1993 240 SW takes very little depressing of the pedal to disengage. Bentley tells me that I should have 1-3mm free play at the fork and 10-15mm at the pedal. Checked. No play. I started to tighten the adjusting nut, but as I turned the nut, the whole plastic contraption inside the bracket turns. Before I break something: is the correct procedure to immobilize the plastic protrusion on foreward end of the bracket with clamping pliers as I turn the nut at the opposite end, or should I just keep turning the hex nut, letting the other end turn with it, and hope that the cable will get longer that way?
