A/C Compressor Bypass 1992 960 900

Does anyone know if it is possibile to bypass the A/C compressor with a shorter
serpentine belt??
The reason being is that my A/C is shot and the compressor bearings are on the way out ( I am afraid that the bearings will seize )
My independant Mechanic was not able to come up with a solution other than installing a used compressor. ( Volvo quoted 825.00 cdn for a new compressor )
The 960 was not available without A/C so no shorter belt exists. What really is upsetting is the fact that even if I replace the compressor I still will not have A/C. ( Volvo reported faulty evaporator, 1500.00 repair )
Thanks
AG
