brake lights only are out 900 1993

all three of my brake lights are out, the other lights back there are working just the three brake lights are out. are they in series where if one goes out they all go out? or is this a bigger problem? I thought there was a display that would light up to tell you there is a problem with your lights?

any help would be great because I had to drive the wife's clown car. a hyundai elantra.
