99 940 wagon 'in glass' antenna faulty? 900

This has me stumped. Bought & installed new Kenwood AM/FM/CD; the CD and FM worked fine. The AM would not home in on any frequency, it continued to scan. I can "set" it to a frequency, but get only very low volume interference/static The 95 940 wagon antenna is built into the driver side rear-most window. I unplugged the antenna at the back of the receiver, and the FM quit working also, indicating the antenna is good. I carefully removed the two snaps that connect the antenna cable at the window, cleaned the connecting snaps and reinstalled the cable; same results, FM OK, but no AM. Drove to highest hill in NW Florida, near AM radio station tower, still no AM reception.

Questions:
Can an antenna function OK for FM but not AM?

Are"in glass" antennas known for this?

Has anyone else experienced this?

Any advice, suggestions, theories, ideas ???

Thanks in advance.
