Rubber Floor mats? 200 1988

Hello All

In my quest to finally have a nice car, the former wife mobile has become mine. A 1988 245. Being absolutely thrilled to have a car of one single matching color, I would like to get a few issues fixed.

I have been chasing water leaks over the past couple of months. I have cleaned the side passages, loosened the large black panels the steering goes threw and used RTV around the edges. Completly removed the airbox from car and used RTV on all connecting edges. Put RTV around the wiper shafts housing and put RTV on the floorvent covers and the corresponding screws. Washed the heck out of it and no leaks. I was getting leaking condinsation from airbox and that seems fixed as well.

I drove for a month without carpet and noticed no leaks. I put the carpet in a week ago and despite a lot of rain the carpet remained dry. This morning on my way to work I reached under the floormats and the driver side felt damp! When I got home I pulled up the carpet and removed the padding. I expected the padding to be soaked. The padding was not soaked but was only slightly wet on the top rubber service. The carpet was only damp in a small area but did smell "moldy".

Finally my question. I am currently using rubber floor mats. Is it possable that thes mats are preventing small amounts of moisture from escapping. Trapping the water in the carpet?

I can live with some water getting into the car as long as it evaporates after ashort while, bur mold is hard on me.
