Starting only sporadically --- ECU??? 200 1984

My 1984 245 started fine this afternoon and seemed to be running great. Then, a quarter mile down the road, the oil pressure light started flickering on and off. I had plenty of oil, so I figured it was electrical. Another quarter mile down the road, I came to the first stop sign. The oil light stopped flickering, but soon thereafter the car started sputtering...then stalled in the intersection.

I tried for a long time to get it started. One of three things would happen each time I turned the key to start it:

1) All the instruments and warning lights came on just like normal, but the car would crank and crank w/o turning over (this is all it will do right now).

2) The motor would turn over, but run for only a few seconds before stalling.

3) MOST INTERESTING: As I turned the key from the first position to the second position (where all the instrument lights come on), I'd hear a WRRRRRR noise for a couple seconds from the general direction of the fuel pump...and the tachometer would jump. Then, when I turned the key to the START position, the tach would jump all over the place (sometimes all the way up to the peg) while the engine cranked (but wouldn't start). It did this a whole bunch of times, but isn't doing it right now.

A friend helped me push the car all the way off the road, and fortunately it's only a mile from home.

Checked all the plug wires, the dizzy cap, etc. Cap/rotor/plugs have less than 2k miles on them.

Any guesses as to what I should try? Given the weird stuff with the tach and the fuel pump, "ECU" came to mind...I know a lot of those things come together in there. Or just the fuel pump relay? There's definitely some kind of electrical gremelin at work...and I'm guessing there's some point where the fuel pump wiring and tach wiring connect that might be responsible.
