1991 240 non turbo 140,000mi. Engine noise at cold start: Piston slap, or dry lifter???

Hi,
Ive had this car now for several months, and Ive been listening to this noise think piston slap, and it might be. But the more I listen I begin to think that maybe its a dry lifter instead. It quiets after driving awhile.
I used to have a volks wagon van with a pancake enging that had a dry lifer at cold start, it made the same type of sound.

What are the chances? How to tell the difference?
