falling on my face from the get go

81 240 wagon (not FI), stumbles and bumbles first thing, but only under load.

Starts fine, runs fine when given throttle at idle. When I try to get going, I have to really rev it up and feather in the clutch or it falls on its face hesitating.

Since rpms climb fine when I give it gas at idle I am not sure what conclusion to draw.

Is the mechanical fuel pump clogged?

Is the carb out of sorts in some way? I maintain the ATF level in it, the damper action is good.

The only fuel filter is a screen in the fuel pump (Pierburg).
