trouble getting going 200 1981

Hi, posted on "ALL" in case it rings a bell with anyone, but my good ole 81 240 wagon (not FI), stumbles and bumbles first thing, but only under load, i.e. is put in gear (manual).

Starts fine, runs fine when given throttle at idle. When I try to get going, I have to really rev it up and feather in the clutch or it falls on its face hesitating, until it warms up. Driveability is pretty bad for the first 5 minutes.

Since rpms climb fine when I give it gas at idle I am not sure what conclusion to draw.

Is the mechanical fuel pump clogged?

Is the carb out of sorts in some way? I maintain the ATF level in it, the damper action is good.

The only fuel filter is a screen in the fuel pump (Pierburg).

After the motor warms up driveability is fine and smooth.
