Weather cooled to 14 f - 87 245 wouldn't start at 3 AM ........... 200 1987

OK - so it was about 14f (-10c) earlier yesterday afternoon - my daughter fired up the 87 Volvo - no problems - drove 7 miles to a babysitting gig.

1:30 AM (middle of the night)and now it is 6f (-14c) - I get a call - "dad - the car won't start."

After some feedback, a few directions and information was traded over the phone, I was satisfied that it was the car acting up again - so I fired up my 78 242 and headed into town, equipped with booster cables, etc.

The car would sputter a bit - cough occassionally - but mostly just cranked.

I also could hear the two fuel pumps humming for a second after releasing the ignition key so the fuel pumps appear to be functioning......

It was not flooded - throttle pedal full open brought nothing, at 1/8 or 1/4 pedal travel would bring on a small cough, then nothing.

When I would apply some throttle pedal and crank - after a few seconds, the speedo needle would jump up as high as 80 kph.......

I thought - OK - if it is the fuel relay - I will pull it, and set it on the defrost vent in the 78 - get it warmed up - and then see if it makes a difference. - No difference.

While waiting - I visually checked the alternator "tickle" wire.... and anything else under the hood that may have been loose or out of the ordinary.

After about 45 minutes - one hour, we decided it was a no starter....

We left the 87 in town, and are back home......

So I brought the fuel pump relay (white rectangular/6 prong - up on right passenger side kick panel, just above carpet line. (Volvo part 1347 603)) home - and pulled it apart - the solder appears in good condition - I will resolder the connections before I re-install it.

The prongs are in good condition - no heat buildup noted.

This is the same Volvo that would not restart after my wife did a quick rinse at the car wash a few days ago. (it wasn't moisture) Also - it has been occasionally tempermental - sputtering at intersections, etc.

In the past few days - I have removed the throttle body, cleaned it - cleaned the idle Air Control valve, new air filter.

What else could be the problem??? has anyone else experienced similar nigglies with their 87 era / jetronic 2.2 control Volvo??

It has just over 300k miles on it - and has been fairly reliable for the past 4 years we have owned it....

the weather is geting colder before it gets warmer - and I really would like this car to be reliable.

Thanks in advance for the input
