Brake Pad replacement on 83 GL--DIY or not? 200 1983

When we bought my son his 240 GL about 18 months/14,000 miles ago, the dealer told us he had about 50% wear left on his brakes. They have begun making some occassional noise, but still work. However, his uncle (my brother-in-law) has offered to help him change out the disc pads. My brother in law has fair equipment, including shop jacks (but no lift), and good metric tools; and he has done brakes on American cars with drums, or front disc/rear drums.

Is there anything unusual about working on the brakes on this vintage Volvo that should make me leary of him doing this job?
