Warning Lights 700 1987

I have been dealing with the same problem on my '87 740 GLE for the past year and a half. There is a delay before the warning lights come on, after turning the key. The delay is directly related to the ambient temperature, nothing above 5c and is several minutes at -20c. I have checked all of my grounds, but I will now go play with my Alternator, and see if that changes anything.
Any other alternators fit in my 740, or are the Volvo ones generally reliable?
