Did they by chance make any 'long shifter' models, perhaps for trucks? Otherwise putting one in a 120 or early 140 model will involve quite a bit of tunnel modification. At least you don't have to worry about the handbrake lever on a 122 or 140, like you do on a 544.

EDIT: Answering my own question. Looks like there are some 'longer' shifter models out there - the pic attached is from a Chevy S-10. Doesn't look like it would work with the stock shifter location on a long shifter Volvo, although modifying the tunnel to fit it might be *slightly* easier. But if you are going to be cutting and chopping anyhow you might as well go full distance and get a nice short shifter for all the effort.
