Muffler removed,, sort of 900

My muffler was loose so I took it to a muffler shop, they removed a round, cylinder shapped, metal object that was attached towards the bumper section of the muffler. I can't remember what they called it, but they said I didn't need it... Three days later my "Check Engine" light came on. Did they remove something necessary? (It was not the catalytic converter)
