Battery questions. 200

I have a 1988 Volvo 244 and I just bought a 1983 244 Turbo. The turbo does not have a battery in it. It has a rusty metal battery tray that I really don't care for. I would like to replace it with a plactic one like I have in my 88. Is this somthing that I can do? I noticed that the 1988 took a group 47 battery while the 1983 takes a group 46 battery. Is this differece explained by battery trays? So, if I changed the battery tray, would the 83 take a group 47 like the 88? Thanks and happy bricking.
